Sarnaude-la-Bastide

Sarnaude-la-Bastide is 15 minutes above the coast road, on terraces built for olives and still planted with them. Most of what sells here is agricultural: a mas, a mill house, a few hectares, a well with its own water right. Almost nothing has a sea view, and nobody asks. The village has a square, a bakery, a school and a Thursday market. Harvest starts in early November and the lanes fill with trailers. The co-operative mill presses for anyone with more than 50 trees.

Walkability
Not walkable in the town sense. The village lanes are flat for 400 m, then everything is gradient: the road up from the mill climbs 90 m in a kilometre. Estates sit 2 to 4 km out.
Schools
The village primary takes children to 11 and had 63 pupils last year. After that it is the collège in Ondrieu-sur-Mer, 20 minutes down, with a school bus from the square at 07:40.
Eating in the village
Three places in the square. One opens Thursday to Sunday only, one closes the day after the harvest ends and reopens in April, and the bakery serves lunch all year. Monday to Wednesday in February, nothing here serves dinner.
Down to the coast
15 minutes to the coast road, 20 to the port at Ondrieu-sur-Mer, 45 to the airport outside the summer months. The last 4 km are single track with passing places, and slow behind a tractor.
